The urine itself contains nitrogen, an important food source for the bacteria. When a pet urinates in a home, the process of breaking down urine is much slower because the carpet and pad contain a limited amount of decomposing bacteria. As the scarce bacteria breaks down the pet urine, it converts the nitrogen to ammonia gas (urine odor). This is called the Nitrogen Cycle, and it’s a problem indoors because there isn’t enough decomposing bacteria to quickly break it down like the soil in your backyard.
